Using Picture Books to Teach Author's Craft
This session will explore the connection between reading and writing, and focus on the use of mentor texts as models for writing. Participants will have an opportunity to examineseveral picture books they may wish to use in their classroom.

Laura Gabrion - Millenial Muses: Creating Animated Poetry
This presentation offers an opportunity for educators to unite students' visual and linguistic literacies. The development of an animated poetry assignment provides students with an opportunity to enhance the meaning of their poems as well as develop a deeper understanding of theme. Participants will first understand the rationale and model behind the creation of animated poetry. After viewing one of Billy Collins' animated poems, participants will then be led through the exercises a creative writing class participated in regarding the creation of the text of a poem and then animating the text through the use of PowerPoint or Windows Movie Maker.
